Mommy makeovers are a grouping of surgical procedures intended to rejuvenate a woman’s appearance after maternity with shorter and less painful recoveries. Here is the second installment of the most frequently asked questions regarding the mommy makeover procedure.
How much weight do I have to lose before a mommy makeover?
The general healthy rule is to be within 10% of your goal weight prior to surgery. A mommy makeover is not a weight loss procedure, so being in optimal overall health — including a healthy weight — is important before surgery.
Will I have scars after a mommy makeover?
Yes, however a skilled board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in mommy makeover procedures will place incisions in the natural folds and contours of your body to diminish their prominence. Scars will also lighten and fade with time.
How long is recovery from a mommy makeover?
Because mommy makeovers are custom procedures, recovery is different for each patient. Most patients are able to return to a desk job after 2 weeks, and are feeling 100% without restrictions within 8 weeks.
Do I have to wear compression garments after surgery?
If you undergo the body contouring portion of a mommy makeover, you will be required to wear compression garments for a period of time determined by your plastic surgeon. Compression garments are intended to reduce swelling and bruising and assist in the overall healing process. Compression garments are considered to be a nuisance by many patients, however, they play a critical role in your results so it is important to follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions.
Will I lose sensation anywhere on my body from the procedure?
Some patients experience some numbness or loss of sensation post-operation. However, this is mostly temporary and normal sensation is gained back within a year. The most sensitive area that is susceptible to numbness or loss of sensation is the nipple area, but permanent nerve damage is rare.
Can I get a breast lift without getting breast implants?
Yes! Breast lifts do not change the size or volume of your breasts. Women interested in increasing or decreasing breast size in addition to a breast lift may consider breast implants or a breast reduction during a mommy makeover. However, women who are interested in breast implants, but are in need of a breast lift cannot have one without the other because the results are not aesthetically pleasing. Your board-certified plastic surgeon will be able to help you determine which combination of procedures is best for you.
