10 Years of BOTOX® | The Decade that Changed It All

Botox Long IslandIn today’s world, BOTOX® has literally become a household name.  But, it wasn’t always that way.

In year’s past, when a patient wanted to turn back the clock, the only real option was surgery – facelifts, brow lifts, etc.  Ten years ago, something changed all that: BOTOX® Cosmetic was FDA approved.  While BOTOX might not have been the very first minimally-invasive treatment around, it was certainly the one that caused the “less-invasive” category to explode.  What was once a simple alternative wrinkle treatment has grown to become the number-one cosmetic procedure in the US.

Why so popular?  Here are a few reasons patients are preferring these minimally-invasive treatments:

  • They work. Patients love that they can see great results without having to go under the knife.  Although BOTOX is not a permanent fix, folks love that their results can last up to several months.
  • Less downtime. Unlike an in-depth surgical procedure, minimally-invasive treatments have little to no downtime.  That means you can get back to your normal activities sooner!
  • No general anesthesia. Many plastic surgery procedures require the patient to go under general anesthesia.  This is not the case with treatments like BOTOX.

BOTOX vs. Fillers

So, is there a difference between BOTOX and fillers?  While they’re both powerful and trusted wrinkle treatments, BOTOX works a bit differently than fillers like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®.  Here’s a brief introduction:

Think of BOTOX as a muscle relaxer.  It works particularly well on what are called “dynamic creases.”  These are the lines that form when we smile, laugh, frown or look puzzled.  Think crow’s feet, frown lines, etc.

Fillers – as the name implies – work to “fill in” creases.  That’s why they’re especially well-suited for creases that are particularly deep and readily visible.
