More than Skin Deep: Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery isn’t only about treating the signs of aging.  Sometimes, patients are in need of a form of treatment known as reconstructive surgery.  In general, reconstructive surgery is any procedure that aims to improve the appearance or function of an abnormal body part.  These abnormalities could have been acquired at birth or they could be a result of certain illnesses or surgeries.  Regardless of the reason, reconstructive surgery can be a life changing and confidence-boosting procedure.

As a Board Certified Reconstructive Surgeon, I perform several reconstructive breast procedures on a regular basis.  These include breast reduction in women and men as well as breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.  Read on to learn a bit more about these vital procedures.

Reconstructive Breast Procedures

Patients have come to me with a host of different breast conditions and concerns.  Here are some of the reconstructive procedures performed at our Long Island Plastic Surgery Offices:

Lejour Breast Reduction: Large breasts can negatively impact a woman both physically and emotionally, causing symptoms such as chronic back pain, rashes, poor posture, low self-esteem and restricted activity. Many women seek treatment to reduce the painful effects of their large breasts, while also improving their self-confidence and overall quality of life. Breast  Reduction Surgery reduces the size of large, disproportionate breasts by removing excess fat, tissue and skin for a more desirable appearance and relief of physical and emotional symptoms.

Male Breast Reduction: Enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia) affects nearly 40-60% of men, often for no apparent reason. This condition can be embarrassing as well as physically uncomfortable. Men who feel self-conscious about enlarged breasts may seek Male Breast Reduction. The procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in some cases excess skin as well. The result is a flatter, firmer chest.

Breast Reconstruction: After a mastectomy (breast removal) many women will opt for Breast Reconstruction Surgery.  Modern surgical technology makes it possible to construct a natural-looking breast, which can enhance appearance and boost self esteem.  There are several ways to reconstruct the breast, including the use of implants.  Women that are unsatisfied with their breast reconstruction or suffering from some abnormality will often opt for breast revision surgery.
