Say Goodnight to Facial Wrinkles

We all know that skincare matters during our waking hours, but did you ever consider that what you do in your sleep can actually affect your appearance?  We spend up to a third of our life in bed, which is making many people ask the question, “Am I doing enough for my skin during the night?”

CBS affiliate, WCCO, reports on this, explaining how sleep position can actually contribute to facial wrinkles.  The television station enlisted the help of an area dermatologist, asking if sleep position can actually contribute to facial creases.  “It absolutely can (cause wrinkles) over time… If you fold a piece of paper enough times you get an etched crease there.”

Health and lifestyle magazine, Prevention, also published an interesting article on the subject, entitled, “Wake Up to Better Skin.” According to the article, a good idea is to cleanse skin before bed.  This will remove the dirt and impurities accumulated during the day, and according to Prevention, washing your face can “[make] your night cream work harder.”

The Face of Your Dreams

Of course, what we do during the night can’t turn back the clock completely.  Sometimes, folks need a little boost.  Here are a few cosmetic treatments for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles:

  • BOTOX®: BOTOX injections are a minimally-invasive procedure that works to prevent facial creases from forming.  The treatment acts essentially as a muscle relaxer, and works best on intermittent creases, such as “frown lines” or “smile lines.”
  • Soft tissue fillers: Soft tissue fillers are often a better option for deeper creases that are always visible.  Unlike BOTOX, fillers like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® literally “fill in” creases, adding volume to the face and achieving a more youthful appearance.
  • Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion, also known as “microderm,” uses a stream of fine particles to exfoliate the skin.  This procedure has been shown to improve mild to moderate sun damage, scarring, wrinkles and other superficial skin problems.
