You may remember a recent study claiming that following a liposuction procedure, unwanted fat can return to untreated areas of the body – the arms, abdomen, etc. While there was certainly a lot of doubt surrounding that claim at the time, there wasn’t sufficient evidence to refute it – until now! Yesterday, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons published a press release outlining new research that shows that liposuction truly “lives up to its promise.”
According to the ASPS, this new study “evaluated 301 patients having liposuction, either alone or in combination with abdominoplasty, using standardized photographs and computer-assisted measurements of body dimensions obtained preoperatively and at least three months after surgery.” So, does fat really return following a liposuction procedure? On the contrary, according to the press release, “The study revealed no evidence of fat regrowth in treated areas of the arms, abdomen, or lower body. Additionally, upper body dimensions were unchanged after surgery, indicating no fat redistribution.”
And, while the debate certainly isn’t over, this new research is allowing many patients to breathe a whole lot easier.
Is Liposuction a Weight Loss Solution?
One of the most common misconceptions about liposuction is that it can help you lose weight – that’s simply not the case. Rather, liposuction targets localized areas of exercise-resistant fat. Common areas include the thighs, midsection, arms and back.
So, how does liposuction work? Liposuction is generally performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. After making several tiny incisions and injecting a local anesthetic into the area to help expand and firm the fat, we use a special tool to suction away fat. No stitches are needed after liposuction since the incisions are small enough to heal on their own. Yes, while it may sound simple, liposuction can often have dramatic results.
