Breast augmentation remains the most popular cosmetic surgery in the country. Now, thanks to advances in technology, materials and technique, women have more options than ever when it comes to choosing the breast implant that works best for them.
The following are the top breast implant options that each woman will consider during the consultation process. Of course, Dr. Rhee will offer her guidance and expertise along the way.
- Saline vs. Silicone: Breast implants are silicone shells filled with either saline or silicone gel. Both types of implants are safe and widely used, and each come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. An advantage of the saline implant is that in the rare case of rupture, the saline (a salt water solution) is simply absorbed by the body. However, saline implants can produce a less natural look in women with less breast tissue, which include small-breasted and reconstruction patients. Silicone implants feel softer and look more natural compared to saline implants, making them the more popular choice.
- Under the muscle vs. Over the muscle: Implant placement is another important decision to consider. Breast implants can either be placed underneath the chest wall muscle, or above the muscle, behind the breast tissue. The placement of the implant underneath the muscle offers several advantages as opposed to the implant placed beneath breast tissue only. These include a reduced risk of capsular contracture (in which skin tightens around the implant), and less interference with mammogram exams. Some of the disadvantages include the need for drains following surgery as well as the possibility of increased pain in the days following the procedure.
- Round vs. Teardrop: Implants come in two shapes: round and teardrop. While round implants are most common, the choice of implant used depends on a number of factors and varies from woman to woman. Round implants tend to provide the greatest amount of lift, shape and fullness to the breast’s contour, making them the popular choice. There is also no concern regarding implant rotation, since the implant is symmetrical on all sides. Teardrop implants can offer a more natural look, with a gently sloping contour. These implants must be textured to help prevent rotation, which could distort the shape of the breast.
