Groupons for Cosmetic Surgery are Controversial

Groupon in the UK sent out a promotional email to members this week offering them discounted plastic surgery. The deal offered was 5,000 GBP in plastic surgery for just 1,999 GBP.  Patients could choose from a breast augmentation or a rhinoplasty for this cost. Of course, true to Groupon’s typical structure, people interested in having cosmetic surgery had to beat the clock with signing up – in this case, by midnight. The controversy with this Groupon was based on that fact that individuals were being forced into making rash decisions. Meanwhile, serious cosmetic procedures need to be carefully considered and discussed with a surgeon before a commitment is made to go under the knife.

Groupon did respond to the concerns voiced by The Independent Healthcare Advisory Service and other consumers. They reminded individuals that no ethical guidelines in medicine were crossed as after the initial consultation took place, patients could choose to request a refund. In total, 186 consumers that purchased this voucher requested reimbursement as they changed their minds after having the opportunity to think through their decision.

This story brings up a point that everyone considering cosmetic surgery must recognize: that the decision can be permanent and life-changing. Individuals that believe they want plastic surgery should take their time and consider their options. A reputable doctor will never put pressure on anyone to jump into a decision as they want patients to be satisfied with the outcome.
