Plastic Surgery Does Increase Body Image, Says Study

Why do patients undergo plastic surgery?  For most, it’s about improving the way you look—and the way you look at yourself!  One study published by the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) wanted to look at whether or not patients actually experienced emotional changes following cosmetic surgery.  One hundred patients were studied before and after cosmetic surgery.  They were then asked to rate their postoperative satisfaction and self-rated level of attractiveness.  The results are quite encouraging.

When it came to patient satisfaction, 87% of patients reported satisfaction with their postoperative outcomes.  Even more impressive were the emotional changes patients reported.  According to the ASERF, “Patients experienced significant improvements in their overall body image, their degree of dissatisfaction with the feature altered by surgery, and the frequency of negative body image emotions in specific social situations.”  Even though patients may have only altered one part of their body, the study reports that “Patients also reported significant improvements in their overall appearance…”

Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures

With a clear line drawn between cosmetic surgery and improved body image, let’s take a moment to look at the most popular cosmetic surgeries that countless women and men are choosing every year.

Here are three of the top surgical procedures in the US, based on data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS):

  • Breast augmentation: Breast Augmentation Surgery continues to be the number one cosmetic surgical procedure in the US.  This surgery aims to increase the size and fullness of breasts that appear too small.  According to the ASPS, over 300,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2011 alone.
  • Liposuction: Liposuction is a surgery aimed at permanently removing unwanted, exercise-resistant fat.  During the procedure, fat is removed from the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks and/or thighs using a suction tool.
  • Eyelid lift: Eyelid Surgery—also known as blepharoplasty—works to combat eyelid sagging and drooping.  During the procedure, we remove excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids.  The result is a fresher, more youthful appearance.
