A shocking report from the Los Angeles Times details charges against a man accused of performing plastic surgery illegally in California. The accused, Carlos Guzmangarza, was supposedly operating an unlicensed, bogus clinic in San Francisco’s Mission district. One victim is claiming she sustained a serious infection as a result of a liposuction procedure Guzmangarza performed. According to a D.A. spokeswoman, “during the procedure, [Guzmangarza] smoked a cigar and had the woman hold the IV bag.”
Guzmangarza is facing charges of “practicing medicine without a license, assault with force most likely to cause great bodily harm, battery causing serious bodily harm, false impersonation, identity theft and grand theft,” reports the Los Angeles Times. If convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
Choosing a Qualified Plastic Surgeon
This sad and disturbing report highlights the importance of always seeking out a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon. While there are many factors to consider, here are some general things to look for when choosing your surgeon.
Tips for finding a good plastic surgeon:
- Check their credentials. Before undergoing any procedure, make sure you’re dealing with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Never be afraid to ask for credentials—it’s your right.
- Insist on seeing past work. Before& After Pictures can give you a good sense of the kind of work a surgeon is capable of.
- Make sure they explain all your options. Each patient has unique needs and goals. Make sure your surgeon is explaining all available treatment options. For example, if you were looking to treat facial creases with injectables, have your doctor explain all your options, including Botox and dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane.
