As you age, stress, exposure to sun, and gravity can affect your face and neck. You may develop deep creases around your mouth, wrinkly and saggy skin on your face, and multiple skin folds and excess fat deposits on your neck. These signs of aging, however, can be removed by means of facelift procedures. While the name may suggest cosmetic procedures for your face alone, facelift procedures also include cosmetic treatments for your neck region. The end result of the treatment is a younger looking you.
Facelift Procedures
A facelift is also known as a rhytidectomy, which literally means removal of wrinkles. There are three different ways that a facelift can be performed:
- Traditional facelift: This is the complete package and treats both your face and neck. It involves repositioning muscles and tissues, fat sculpting, trimming and redraping of skin. Incisions are made that start at your temples, move down in front and then back around your ears and end at the lower scalp. An incision is also made under your chin.
- Neck lift: This is only for cosmetic problems in your neck region. Loose skin, excess fat under your chin, and jowls are removed.
- Limited-incision facelift: This is generally for small areas, like around your mouth and eyes. These also include incisions but only near the affected areas. Your lower and/or upper eyelids may also require incisions.
Stitches will be used to close all incisions, though tissue glue may also be used. Any scars are hidden amongst your face’s natural contours or in your hairline. Swelling, bruising, numbness, tightness in the operated area are common after the procedure. You may also have a distorted look. All problems usually disappear by the end of six weeks, though you can start working again in three weeks with the use of cosmetics. Proper sensation will return within six months. You may need a repeat procedure ten years down the line.
