There are two major types of breast implants available – saline and silicone. Both forms of implants are safe and efficient, and offer their own unique advantages. In an effort to better aid patients in determining the right implant for them, it’s important to understand the differences between these two types.
One of the biggest advantages of saline breast implants is that in the event of a rupture, the body will naturally absorb and dissolve the solution. Saline implants are also very simple to replace, should they begin to leak.
Some of the criticism of saline breast implants are that they are heavier and firmer than silicone. Some patients also report a slight “rippling” effect. This “rippling” issue isn’t present in every patient and should be looked at on a case-by-case basis, depending the size of the implant and the build of the patient looking to undergo surgery.
Silicone implants are typically lighter and issues of “rippling” haven’t been as reported by patients with saline implants. Individuals also report a more natural feel to the implants.
Some of the negative aspects of silicone implants include more extensive surgery should the implants rupture and begin to leak. The FDA also advises patients to undergo periodic MRI examinations to determine whether or not the implants are leaking.
Silicone breast implants are typically the implant of choice for most of our patients. While there are many differences and similarities between saline and silicone implants, it’s important to understand the differences between the two.
